Trip outline

Tanzania is one of the most beautiful and friendly counties that you can visit and this trip offers a wonderful insight into its culture, animals and people that live in the shadow of the highest free standing mountain in the world – Mt Kilimanjaro.

Flights depart from Heathrow Airport and arrive in Kilimanjaro International Airport (Tanzania) where a private transfer will take you directly to Moshi – the village at the base of the mountain. To help with your acclimatization you will stay in the Springlands Hotel 4* for two nights enabling you to relax and prepare for the safari ahead. You then head out to the Massi Mara for a 4 day safari - experiencing the countries wide and diverse creatures from elephants, lion and Hippo’s to its incredible birdlife and scenery. The safari will take you to the Lake Manyara then on to the Serengeti National Park and on to the Ngorongoro Crater. After the safari you’ll have a day visit to the Chegga Waterfalls (over 80m high!) and a refreshing dip in the warm pools at the base. The afternoon is spent having a traditional Chagga lunch in the village and a visit to the coffee plantations on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. The next 2 days are spent with a local Maasai Tribe, experiencing and learning about their culture and spending time with the tribe. For this we leave Moshi and head to ‘Olpopangi’ an authentic Maasai Village and this includes an evening program of Maasai events and a BBQ buffet.

Each group is led by a fully qualified Kilimanjaro National Park Guide assisted by porters and cooks. During the hotel stay a representative of the trekking company is always on hand for advice, and they are incredibly accommodating, courteous and friendly.

This is the very best time to view the animals in this park. The scenery is also fantastic and as you approach the East Rift Valley the escarpment looms on the horizon making a very impressive back drop to the lake and savannah. Throughout the afternoon you will see plenty of monkeys, elephants, zebras, impalas, giraffes, buffalos, hippos and more making an excellent start to the safari experience. Day 5 The drive to Serengeti National Park via Olduvai Gorge this takes around 3 hours but is again very scenic with plenty to see. Olduvai Gorge is an archaeological site located in the eastern Serengeti plains, in which early human fossils were first discovered. There are lots of colourful flamingoes and the variety of water birds. Other game that you should see includes leopard, cheetah hyenas. In the early evening drive back to the Hotel for a night’s accommodation.

Day 8 Today we visit to the coffee plantations in Chagga region on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. The Tanzanian coffee industry is a major part of the landscape surrounding Moshi as Tanzania exports it Arabic coffee beans all over the world. Materuni is the home of the Chagga tribe and is still an authentic tribal village. This charming place is just 15km away from Moshi Town and is the last village before the Kilimanjaro National Park. Upon arrival, you will register at the village office and your trip can begin. First you will visit the waterfalls, which are around a 40 minute walk away. On the way, your guide will inform you about the culture of the Chagga, village life and explain the surrounding fauna and flora. The views are truly breathtaking, and with some luck you will see the summit of Kilimanjaro. When you reach the waterfalls, you will see that they are more than 80 meters high. The pool at the bottom of the waterfall is an inviting place for a refreshing swim so don‘t forget your swimwear! After having enjoyed the scenery, you slowly return with your guide to Materuni village, where you will experience a traditional Chagga lunch. You also will have the opportunity to taste our local banana beer definitely not to be missed!  But that’s not all.  Next the coffee experience awaits you. Here you will learn how coffee is cultivated, dried, roasted and further processed. You will also be invited to help with the grinding of the coffee, which is traditionally accompanied by Chagga songs and dances - a fun way to immerse yourself in the local culture. Before you say goodbye and return in the afternoon to Moshi, you can savour the coffee you made and appreciate the views of the surrounding rainforest.
