The Katy Holmes Trust is very proud to have organised this trek alongside Life Changing Challenges and the British Expedition Company in memory of beautiful 10 year old Katy Holmes as part of her incomplete bucket list. Katy was only 10 years old when her life was tragically cut short in 2012 by a cruel brain tumour. Katy made a list of places she wanted to go to so we honour her memory by completing the challenges for her and raising money to fund paediatric brain tumour research.
Why your challenge counts
Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and the under 40’s, yet treatments haven’t changed much over the last 40 years. In 2014 we were fortunate enough to find some world class brain tumour research to fund through The Brain Tumour Charity and with your help we will be able to continue to help fund pioneering treatments and research into paediatric brain tumours.
Originally planned for our departure on Friday 21 August 2020, this final destination on Katy’s bucket list has sadly had to be moved to July 2021 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We always planned this adventure to be the final overseas challenge before The Charity’s close, so this postponement means the funds raised by any new participants won’t be able to benefit The Katy Holmes Trust, directly. However having always worked so closely with The Brain Tumour Charity and with our plans to merge in Autumn 2020, we’ve agreed that the fundraising from any remaining place’s will be raised for The Brain Tumour Charity and designated to DIPG research, in Katy’s memory. At this time we very much appreciate how hard it is to raise money, so we’re only asking that you pledge to raise a minimum of £500 for The Brain Tumour Charity. To help you with your fundraising we would recommend setting up an online fundraising page, as these are a great tool in sharing your challenge with your family, friends and colleagues. We’d recommend using Just Giving or Virgin Money Giving but please feel free to use the platform that you feel most comfortable using. We can also provide you with a fundraising pack and sponsorship forms.

Trip dates: 23rd July to 30th July 2021
The trip offers you the challenge of trekking the very best routes throughout the Canadian Rockies seeing incredible sights in one of the most amazing countries.
This program is designed for fit walkers but no previous mountain hiking experience is required. This Canadian Rockies walking trip involves hiking for up to 6 to 7 hours per day, usually with distances of 10-14 Km. The final walk may be longer with a possible distance up to 21 km. Elevation gains will vary from 300 m up to 800 m and you will need to carry a daypack large enough for spare clothing, your camera, lunch and something to drink each day.
Your guides are experienced professional hiking guides with certification from the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides and from the Mountain Parks Heritage Interpretation Association. They are chosen for their enthusiasm and interest in sharing their knowledge of these mountains.
Throughout the trip you will be very well looked after and all the staff and more than willing to help and advise throughout.
23rd July – Depart the UK from London Gatwick (North) Airport to Calgary in Canada. Arrive in Calgary late afternoon.
Upon our arrival in Calgary we will transfer to Kananaskis and in the evening meet for a team briefing with the guides ready for the following days. We’ll review maps of the area and will make sure that you have everything that you need.
24th July - Walking Prairie View in Kananaskis
Your guide will meet you back at the hotel after breakfast, following which we’ll head out on our first hike in Kananaskis country. Our choice to break the ice is Prairie View Lookout trail. This trail, located in the Front Ranges, will allow you to see the incredible difference there are looking east towards Calgary and the Prairies or looking west towards the incredible Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Elevation Gain: 420m. Distance: 13km. Duration: 4-5hrs
25th July - Kananaskis hike and transfer to Banff
Our drive to Banff will be done through the scenic Spray Lakes road. About half-way through, we will stop for our day hike, Chester Lake or Burstall Pass. Your guide will make the best decision depending on the group to let everyone get acclimatized to our higher elevation and dryer air.
Elevation Gain: 350-450m. Distance: 10-15km. Duration: 3-5hr
Driving duration = 2.5hr
26th July - Fire and Ice
Today’s hike takes us into Kootenay National Park and the Stanley Glacier Trail. You’ll walk through a remarkable valley of “Fire and Ice” – “fire” being the remains of a 1968 wildfire, almost regrown now, and “ice” being the Stanley Glacier overhanging the cliffs at the head of the valley.
Elevation Gain: 600m.
Distance: 13km. Duration: 4-5hr
27th July - Lake Louise
After a healthy breakfast, we’ll drive directly to world famous Lake Louise. Here we will have a choice of hikes available including a walk to the Lake Agnes Teahouse, or to the Plain of Six Glaciers or to do a round trip circuit including both. After our hike we’ll head towards Lake Louise Village for the evening.
Elevation Gain: 400m. Distance: 18km. Duration: 6-8hr
Overnight: Lake Louise
Driving duration = 1hr
28th July - Final Challenge
For our final day of hiking, we’ll have a difficult choice to make: either Moraine Lake and Sentinel Pass or the Iceline Trail in Yoho National Park. It’s a difficult choice to make because we consider both trails to be in the list of top hiking trails of the Canadian Rockies. We will be well rewarded at the end of the day while sitting altogether for our farewell dinner (included).

12km+. Duration: 6-8hr
Overnight: Lake Louise
29th July - Transfer to Calgary
Breakfast at Lake Louise followed by a transfer to Calgary in the morning and flight back to the UK.
30th July - Land back in the UK at London Gatwick (North) Airport.
Clothing and Equipment
Throughout the trip you will need the following items to make your trek safe and enjoyable:
- HIKING BOOTS/SHOES These should be 'broken-in' and have good ankle support and tread. Your boots will make or break your holiday so some time spent getting used to them is time well spent.
- DAYPACK Large enough to carry extra clothing (rain jacket & tousers, sweater, gloves, hat), lunch and snack food, water bottle and camera plus accessories.
- WATER BOTTLE (1 Litre)
- SMALL BLISTER & FIRST AID KIT
- SUN BLOCK & LIP BALM
- INSECT REPELLENT
- WALKING CLOTHING
- HAT Wool or Fleece
- 2 LIGHT TOPS or undershirts. Light weight synthetic or wool
- 2 SHIRTS Light to medium
- 2 T-SHIRTS for warm, dry sunny days
- FLEECE JACKET or sweater
- RAIN JACKET with HOOD sufficient to withstand a day of rain or snow
- GLOVES or light MITTS
- SOCKS several changes. We suggest a wool blend for comfort.
- SHORT Trousers can be very comfortable for hiking; they should be quick drying, and preferably not cotton.
- HIKING TROUSERS comfortable and quick drying, not cotton
- RAIN TROUSERS sufficient to withstand a day of rain or snow
- RUNNING SHOES OR OTHER LIGHT WEIGHT FOOTWEAR (backup in case you get blisters).
Clothing for non-walking days or for evenings in town should be light and comfortable. You will be able to enter any restaurant or establishment in casual clothing. Soft soled shoes are more appropriate than hard soled shoes.

Weather and Climate in Canada
This trip operates during the summer, though snow can linger at high elevations until well into the season. Weather is unpredictable at any time of year, but it’s generally quite warm in July. Daytime highs range from 15-25 C and night time temperatures drop to 5-10 C. As with alpine environments throughout the globe, the higher you go, the lower the temperature becomes. Ensuring that you have the correct clothing for an alpine environment is crucial.
All our expeditions are as ‘all inclusive’ as possible this means that the cost covers all the accommodation, flights, transfers, guides, breakfast and lunch. We only leave dinner open so you have greater options, choice and flexibility.
Costs and payment structure
The cost of the trip is £2,600 plus a donation payable directly to The Brain Tumour Charity. The charity would appreciate if you could raise as much as you can and set yourself a fundraising goal of £500.
There is a £250 trip deposit (non-refundable) to book your place, payable to Life Changing Challenges and the remaining balance is paid in instalments to The British Expedition Company.
Invoiced for payment after deposit paid £2350.
To enter Canada with a UK passport you will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This can be done using the Canadian Government website and the application costs $7 Canadian Dollars. For more information please refer to link below:
How to reserve your place on the trip
To book a place on the trip simply pay deposit online.
When your deposit is received a trip booklet is sent out detailing every element of the trip. This includes information on VISA’s, insurance, fundraising ideas and kit information.
On advancement of deposit for a booking on any of our trips or expeditions the deposit acknowledges that he/she has read and understands the below booking conditions and agrees to be bound by them.
The trip is organised by ‘The British Expedition Company’.

The British Expeditions Company treks are ‘all inclusive’ this means that the cost covers all the accommodation, flights, flight tax, transfers, guides, porters and cooks + all food throughout your expedition. *The only costs not included are VISA’s, travel insurance, tips, lunch and drinks in the hotel.
